Question 1

What is a typing test?

Accepted Answer

A typing test is an online tool that measures how fast and accurately you can type. It tracks your Words Per Minute (WPM) and accuracy percentage as you type a given passage or word list within a fixed time limit — such as a 1 minute, 3 minute, or 5 minute test.

Question 2

Is TypingTestMate completely free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, TypingTestMate is completely free to use. There is no subscription, no premium plan, no sign-up, and no login required. Every feature — including timed typing tests, multiple language layouts, custom text mode, typing games, and performance graphs — is available to everyone at no cost.

Question 3

How is WPM calculated in a typing test?

Accepted Answer

WPM (Words Per Minute) is calculated by dividing the total number of correctly typed characters by 5 (the standard word length), then dividing by the number of minutes elapsed. Formula: WPM = (Correct Characters ÷ 5) ÷ Minutes. Only correctly typed words count — errors reduce your final WPM score.

Question 4

Can I use my own text for the typing test?

Accepted Answer

Yes! TypingTestMate supports custom text mode. You can paste any paragraph, article, job exam passage, or book excerpt and use it as your typing test content. This is perfect for targeted practice with material relevant to your profession or exam preparation.

Question 5

Can I take a free typing test online?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. TypingTestMate is a free online typing test that requires no registration. Just open the website, choose your test duration and language, and start typing immediately. Your WPM speed and accuracy are displayed in real time.

Question 6

How is typing speed measured?

Accepted Answer

Typing speed is measured in WPM (Words Per Minute). One 'word' is standardized as 5 characters, including spaces. The test counts how many correct characters you type within the given time window, then converts that to a WPM score. Higher WPM means faster typing.

Question 7

How can I improve my typing speed?

Accepted Answer

The best ways to improve typing speed are: (1) Practice daily with timed typing tests, (2) Use all 10 fingers with proper touch-typing technique, (3) Focus on accuracy first — speed naturally follows, (4) Start with easier difficulty levels and progressively move to harder passages, (5) Use TypingTestMate's typing games like Word Rain and Typing Quest to make practice fun and engaging.

Question 8

Does TypingTestMate support other languages like Hindi?

Accepted Answer

Yes! TypingTestMate supports multiple language layouts, including dedicated typing modes for bilingual professionals. You can practice in English or switch to our dedicated Hindi typing test which supports both Inscript and Devlys (Krutidev) keyboard layouts.

Question 9

How is typing accuracy calculated?

Accepted Answer

Typing accuracy is calculated as the percentage of correctly typed characters out of total characters attempted. Formula: Accuracy (%) = (Correct Characters ÷ Total Characters Typed) × 100. Even if you correct a mistake using backspace, it may still be counted as an error, so aim to type carefully rather than rushing.

Question 10

How long should a typing test be?

Accepted Answer

The ideal typing test duration depends on your goal. A 1-minute typing test is great for a quick speed check. A 3-minute test gives a more balanced view of sustained speed and accuracy. A 5-minute test reflects real-world typing endurance and is commonly used in professional assessments and government exams. TypingTestMate offers 1, 2, 3, and 5 minute test options.
